New Delhi: Hopes for peace have been revived in the nearly four-year-long war in Ukraine. Intensive work is underway on a new US proposal, with the USA attempting to mediate and finalize the agreement between both sides. Meanwhile, US officials said on Monday, December 15, that Ukraine and Europe have agreed on approximately 90 per cent of the points in the peace plan drafted by the US. US President Donald Trump stated that the two countries are closer to a peace agreement than ever before.

Zelenskyy Says Peace Agreement To End The War Underway

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a statement that a peace agreement to end the ongoing war with Russia could be finalized in the coming days after talks with US officials. He said that US envoys would then present the draft agreement to Russia before potential meetings in the US next weekend.

Zelenskyy told reporters late Monday that the draft peace plan discussed with the US in Berlin was “very practical.” However, the Ukrainian president cautioned that some issues, including the territories occupied by Russia, remain unresolved.

Territory Issue Remains One Of The Most Difficult Obstacles

The issue of territory remains one of the most difficult obstacles to a comprehensive agreement. Putin wants the four major regions seized through military action, as well as the Crimean Peninsula, which was annexed in 2014, to be recognized as Russian territory.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is also objecting to some other proposals, including post-war security guarantees for Ukraine. Zelenskyy reiterated that Ukraine will not recognize Russian control over any part of the economically vital Donbas region.
