New Delhi: Russia has launched a major attack on Ukraine, targeting two passenger trains, setting them on fire. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said dozens of people were injured in a Russian drone attack on a Ukrainian railway station on Saturday, 04 October 2025. Moscow has intensified attacks on Ukraine’s rail and power grid ahead of its fourth winter since its widespread invasion. Zelensky said at least 30 people were injured in the attack on the town of Shostka, northeast of Kyiv, about 70 km from the Russian border.

Injured rushed to hospitals

“All emergency services have already arrived at the scene and started helping people. All information about the injured is being gathered,” he said in a post on X. Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister and Reconstruction Minister Oleksiy Kuleba said Russia attacked two passenger trains one after the other, first a local train and then a train heading to Kyiv. “Medical teams have already transported the injured to hospitals and are providing the necessary assistance,” Kuleba wrote on Telegram on Saturday, 04 October 2025. Others who were at the scene are in shelters under the supervision of rescue workers.” He added that an air raid alert remains in effect at the station.

Ukraine’s railway network targeted continuously

Both Zelensky and local governor Oleh Hryhorov posted photos from the scene, showing a passenger compartment on fire. Moscow has recently intensified airstrikes on Ukraine’s railway network, essential for military transport, and has been under attack almost daily for the past two months. As in previous years, since the full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022, the Kremlin has also intensified attacks on Ukraine’s power grid, which Kyiv calls an attempt to weaponise the coming winter by depriving citizens of heat, light, and water.

Russia launches massive attack on Ukraine’s power grid

Earlier, Russia launched a massive attack on Ukraine’s power grid with drones and missiles from Friday night to Saturday, a Ukrainian energy company reported. A day earlier, officials had reported that Russia had attacked Ukraine’s natural gas installations on Friday, October 3, the largest attack since Moscow launched the full-scale invasion three and a half years ago. According to the regional operator, power grid attacks damaged energy facilities near the northern city of Chernihiv, near the Russian border, and power outages are expected to affect 50,000 homes. Dmytro Bryzhinsky, head of the Chernihiv military administration, confirmed that the overnight Russian attack on the city caused several fires but did not specify the extent of the damage. Ukrainian officials said a day earlier that Russia had launched the largest attack since the war began on natural gas facilities operated by Ukraine’s state-owned Naftogaz group.
