Russian Su-57 fighter jet: Russia’s 5th generation Su-57 fighter jet recently participated in Aero India 2025. It was to be sent back to Russia, but before returning, the Su-57 had to land at an Iranian air force base, which has sparked various speculations. According to Iranian sources, the Su-57 landed at the 9th Tactical Air Force Base. It was claimed that the fighter jet stopped here for refuelling.
The distance between Russia and India is over 4000 km, and the range of the Su-57 is 3500 km, so a stopover was necessary to cover this distance. Bandar Abbas, located near the Persian Gulf, was deemed suitable for this stop as it is also strategically advantageous.
This landing was not just limited to fulfilling a need, but it also gave Iran a chance to closely observe this fifth-generation advanced fighter jet. Iran has shown interest in Russian fighter jets recently. However, no official confirmation regarding this landing has been made by Russian or Iranian officials.
Generally, Russian aircraft used the Khmeimim base in Syria to complete long routes, but after the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government in December 2024, this base is no longer a viable option for Russia. As a result, Russia had to choose Iran as a new location for its fighter jets.
This landing could also be part of an effort by Russian president Vladimir Putin to pitch the Su-57 to potential customers. Iran is one of the powerful countries among military powers worldwide. Therefore, it may show interest in the Su-57, making Russia’s move quite interesting.
