Condition of Pakistan is not hidden to the world. From abysmal condition of government institutions to its education system, everything is in question. In this article we will focus on the education system of our neighbouring country, particularly for girls.

According to UNICEF, Currently Pakistan has the world’s second-highest number of out-of-school children (OOSC) with an estimated 22.8 million children aged 5-16 not attending school, representing 44 per cent of the total population in this age group. In the 5-9 age group, 5 million children are not enrolled in schools and after primary-school age, the number of OOSC doubles, with 11.4 million adolescents between the ages of 10-14 not receiving formal education. Disparities based on gender, socio-economic status, and geography are significant; in Sindh, 52 percent of the poorest children (58 percent girls) are out of school, and in Balochistan, 78 percent of girls are out of school.

Nearly 10.7 million boys and 8.6 million girls are enrolled at the primary level and this drops to 3.6 million boys and 2.8 million girls at the lower secondary level.

The method of education in Pakistan is very different. Education in Pakistan is provided on the basis of 6 levels, which include pre-school, primary, middle, high, intermediate and university schooling.

In Pakistan boys and girls are not taught together. After reaching higher classes, the education of girls is separate from that of boys. Apart from this, there are many separate schools for girls and boys. Whereas, the Indian education system is divided into pre-primary (nursery and central schools), primary (classes 1 to 5), secondary (classes 6 to 10) and higher secondary (classes 11 and 12), followed by university.

In Pakistan, education starts from pre-school. However, very young children go to pre-school. One can get enrolled in pre-school from the age of 3 years.

Studies are done till the age of 5 years. After this, the child comes into middle education and gets admitted to class one.

Middle school runs till class five. Urdu, English, Mathematics, Arts, Science, Social Studies, Islamic Studies are taught here. Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashto are also taught there.

Secondary education includes education from class 9 to class 12. Like India, in Pakistan too, admission to college is done after class 12. Here university education is called territory education.

How is it for girls?

According to reports, in Pakistan it is mandatory for girls to wear a dupatta/scarf with their dresses. Apart from this, wearing short sleeve T-shirts etc. is not allowed. Apart from this, girls are not allowed to wear bangles or heavy jewellery in school. In many universities of Pakistan, there is a rule that if girls do not follow the dress code, they will have to pay a fine.
