Dhaka: With the removal of Sheikh Hasina’s government, radical groups in Bangladesh have started targeting the Hindu minority. Several reports have emerged from the neighboring country detailing widespread arrests of Hindu priests, attacks on temples, and numerous incidents of violence. Amid this turmoil, extremists have launched a new form of protest in Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka. A group of extremists recently held a rally in the city, warning restaurant owners that eateries not serving beef would face boycotts.

The protest rally was organised by the ‘Muslim Bhokta Adhikar Parishad’ near the Gulistan Golap Shah Mazar. Protesters stated that beef is a staple preference for people in Bangladesh, therefore, every restaurant should include it on their menu.

They protested against eateries avoiding beef to cater to Hindu clients, accusing them of compromising the rights of the majority. They also claimed that restaurant owners were attempting to align the country’s practices with those of India.

These protestors warned eateries refusing to serve beef would be labelled as a supporter of BJP. Only those serving beef would be considered patriotic. As per a report, under pressure, two restaurants have already added beef dishes to their menus.

The rising atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh has gathered international attention, prompting protests in several countries.

In United Kingdom, Labour Party leader Pushpita Gupta said that if Bangladesh cannot ensure the rights of Hindus, a separate nation for them should be considered. She further criticised Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, stating that despite his prominence, he has failed to curb violence against Hindu minority. The Hindu population in Bangladesh continues to decrease alarmingly.

It is worth noting that, the arrest of Hindu priest Chinmoy Das has further raised concerns. Allegations suggest that Das has been falsely imprisoned under false and fabricated charges.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs has interfered and called for a fair trial in his case. Meanwhile, ISKCON Kolkata has pledged to hold special prayers regularly for the safety of religious minorities in Bangladesh.

ISKCON’s spokesperson Radharaman Das stated that they will continue daily prayers at their Albert Road center until normalcy is restored in the neighbouring country.
