Dhaka: The situation in neighboring Bangladesh is worsening day by day since Sheikh Hasina was ousted and forced to leave the country. Mohammad Yunus has become the head of the interim government. Amid the ongoing issues, another major problem has arisen in the country, as its capital, Dhaka, has set a record for the worst air quality in the world. The air has become so toxic that it is being called a silent killer. According to a report, more than 100,000 people die in Bangladesh every year due to toxic air.

According to the air quality and pollution ranking released on Saturday, Dhaka recorded an air quality index (AQI) of 304, which falls in the ‘hazardous’ category.

Notably, an air quality index ranging from 151 to 200 is categorised as ‘severe’, while AQI between 201 to 300 are considered ‘very severe’, and 301 to 400 are labelled as ‘hazardous’. Hazardous air quality can cause major health risks to the population of Bangladesh.

The air quality report was published by the Swiss-based organization IQAir. The AQI index measures daily air quality. It describes the quality of the air and its effects on health. AQI also shows how breathing polluted air for a few hours or days can affect people’s health.

Over One Lakh Die Every Year

As per The Daily Star, a prominent newspaper, the country is grappling with major air pollution issues. A study by the Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air reveals that air pollution in the country is responsible for approx 102,456 fatalities every year in the country.

Additionally, the World Health Organization highlights that millions of people in the world succumb to air pollution each year, with data showing that 90 percent people are exposed to air with high pollutant levels.

WHO is working with several countries to monitor air pollution and improve the quality of the air.

From smog to smoke, air pollution is a major threat to people’s health and the climate.
