A new controversy has erupted over the installation of barbed wire fencing along the international border between India and Bangladesh. This agreement was made during the tenure of ousted leader Sheikh Hasina, who was the Prime Minister of Bangladesh at the time. The interim government led by Mohammad Yunus has recently raised serious objections regarding India’s barbed wire fencing. The interim government summoned the Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka to express its protest. Until recently, the border issue between India and Bangladesh was considered resolved.

Yunus raises objection after Hasina’s exit

The installation of barbed wire on the unfenced parts of the India-Bangladesh border began in April last year, with the Border Security Force (BSF) following the existing agreement and notifying the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in advance. The process went smoothly until December, when the interim government, led by Yunus, which had forced Hasina to flee the country after a student movement, raised objections to the fencing activities. Some reports even suggest that Yunus’ government is considering terminating Bangladesh’s border agreement with India.

Bangladesh raises objections

According to a report by The Indian Express, citing sources in the Border Security Force (BSF), the installation of fencing along the international border in West Bengal’s Malda district began in April and proceeded “smoothly” for the next three months. However, the work has faced repeated halts since November, when the interim government led by Yunus came to power in Bangladesh. The report further states, “Between April and June, the fencing work continued with prior notification to Bangladesh. From July to October, the work was halted due to the monsoon, as several areas were flooded. In November, the fencing resumed, but the project faced setbacks after the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) raised objections for the first time.”

Threatening to review the old agreement

A BSF officer stated that the fencing activities resumed in December 2024, ensuring that the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) was “already notified as per our existing agreement.” The officer added, “However, the interim government of Bangladesh is now reneging on this agreement and has stated that they will review it.” After facing disruptions from Bangladesh regarding the border fencing, another BSF officer mentioned that the recent actions of the neighboring country suggest they might be backing away from the previously agreed-upon joint fencing plan.

Indian High Commissioner summoned

The dispute over the India-Bangladesh border fencing escalated on Sunday, as Yunus’s government accused India of attempting to build fences at five locations along the India-Bangladesh border, violating the bilateral agreement. Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma to express “deep concern” over the “recent activities” of the BSF. During the meeting, Bangladesh’s Foreign Secretary, Shahidul Haque, objected to the alleged “unauthorized” attempts to install barbed wire fences at multiple locations along the border, causing unnecessary tension and unrest.
