US President Donald Trump, along with Russian President Vladimir Putin, addressed the media after their much-anticipated closed-door meeting in Alaska earlier today. The bilateral meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin lasted well over three hours. The summit was seen as a possible turning point in US-Russia relations and the war in Ukraine. The two leaders did not take questions but gave brief statements, calling the talks “constructive.” After their historic Alaska summit, Putin suggested holding the next meeting in Moscow. Trump said they would likely meet again soon.
The summit was held at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska. The Alaska summit between Trump and Putin included top officials from both sides. Putin was joined by foreign policy aide Yury Ushakov and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, while Trump was accompanied by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and US special envoy Steve Witkoff.
At the end of the joint press conference, Trump suggested that there could be more talks between the United States and Russia, indicating that the two would likely meet again in the near future. Trump stated,” Would probably see you again very soon.”
Putin then surprised everyone by inviting Trump to Moscow for their next meeting. The two leaders shared some smiles, with Trump following up with the comment that the proposal was “interesting.” While admitting the idea might stir criticism in the US, Trump said he would still consider it “if that could be possible.”
The press event ended soon after, with both leaders turning off their microphones and leaving the stage without answering reporters’ questions. Before walking away, they paused to shake hands, a gesture that marked a friendly close to the high-stakes talks.
What praise did Putin give to Trump after the talks?
Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledged that Ukraine’s security should be ensured as well, and lauded US President Donald Trump’s efforts to resolve the conflict. Speaking at a joint press conference after nearly three hours of talks with US President Donald Trump on the Russia-Ukraine conflict that started in February 2022, Putin emphasised the need for a just balance of power in Europe and expressed hope that Kyiv and European capitals would engage constructively in the peace process.
“We see the strive of the administration and President Trump personally to help facilitate the resolution of the Ukrainian conflict and his strive to get to the crux of the matter to understand this history is precious. The situation in Ukraine poses a fundamental threat to our security. Moreover, the Ukrainian nation, and I have said it multiple times, is a brotherly nation; however strange it may sound in these conditions. We have the same roots, and everything that’s happening is a tragedy for us. And a terrible wound,” Putin said.
It is to be noted that before the meeting began, members of the press shouted questions at Putin regarding a possible ceasefire in Ukraine. According to the CNN report, he was seen mouthing and shouting something in the direction of the press, but it’s unclear what he said.
