Trump tariffs: US President Donald Trump has urged NATO countries to stop purchasing oil from Russia, and impose 50 to 100 percent tariffs on China to break Beijing’s “strong grip” over Moscow, and force a resolution in the Russia-Ukraine war. In a post on his Truth Social network on Saturday, Trump said he is ready to impose “major sanctions” on Russia when all NATO countries agree and start to do the same thing and stop buying oil from Moscow.
In his post, which came a day after the US asked G7 countries to impose tariffs on countries who buy Russian oil, Trump said NATO’s “commitment to win has been far less than 100%, and the purchase of Russian oil, by some, has been shocking!”.
“It greatly weakens your negotiating position, and bargaining power, over Russia,” the US President said, adding that he was “ready to go” when the NATO countries are ready.
Trump also urged NATO countries to slap 50-100 percent tariffs on China, which he claimed will “also be great help in ending this deadly, but ridiculous war”.
He also claimed that “China has a strong control, and even grip, over Russia, and these powerful Tariffs will break that grip”, adding that the Russia-Ukraine conflict was not “Trump’s war” but Biden and Zelenskyy’s, and would have never started if he was the President at the time.
“It is Biden’s and Zelenskyy’s war. I am only here to help stop it, and save thousands of Russian and Ukrainian lives…If NATO does as I say, the war will end quickly, and all of those lives will be saved! If not, you are just wasting my time, and the time, energy, and money of the United States,” he asserted.
Donald Trump has imposed an 30 percent tariffs on Chinese goods, while Beijing has responded with 10 percent import duties on American products. Earlier, Trump had slapped 145 percent taxes on Chinese imports before the two rivals reached a deal in May to end the tariff war.
Notably, on Friday, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and the United States Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer were on a call with G7 finance ministers when they reiterated Trump’s call to the bloc’s partners about imposing tariffs on countries purchasing oil from Russia.
