New Delhi: The Vladimir Putin-led Russia has wreaked havoc on Ukraine ever since the war began between the two countries. To make matters worse, the Donald Trump administration is now trying to seize whatever rare resources remain in the already devastated Ukraine. On Saturday, US President Donald Trump said that he is trying to reclaim the aid provided to Ukraine to fight the war against Russia. Donald Trump is negotiating deals regarding Ukraine’s rare mineral resources.
According to the sources, the US government is attempting to revoke the aid given to Ukraine during the Biden administration. This marks the biggest and most significant shift in the Ukraine war since Trump took office, as his administration has completely reversed America’s foreign policy on Ukraine.
Donald Trump told delegates at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Washington, “I am trying to get the money back or secure it.” He said, “I want them to give us something in return for all the money we have spent. We are asking for rare earth materials and oil—whatever we can get. We will get our money back. I think we are very close to a deal, and we should be close because this has been a terrible situation.”
However, according to a report by the South China Morning Post, a source from Ukraine has said that President Zelensky appears to be under increasing pressure from the United States. However, he still does not want to sign such an agreement.
Earlier this week, Keith Kellogg, Donald Trump’s special envoy, met with Zelensky. After the meeting, he stated that the Ukrainian president understands that making a deal with the US is “important.” However, Ukrainian sources have said that Kyiv first needs assurances from the U.S.
A source familiar with the matter said, “In its current form, the president is not ready to accept the draft; we are still trying to make changes and add creativity.”
Reports suggest that the Zelensky-led Ukraine now wants any agreement with the US to include security guarantees. It argues that it has been battling the Russian invasion for three years. However, the discussions between the US and Ukraine regarding rare mineral resources are taking place at a time when there is also a war of words between President Trump and President Zelensky.
Donald Trump called Ukrainian President Zelensky a ‘dictator’ and asked him to end the Ukraine war at the earliest. He also questioned why he had not ended the war in the past three years.
Additionally, last week in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, a meeting took place between U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. During this meeting, the U.S. assured Russia that sanctions would be lifted after the war ended. Moreover, the U.S. is not in the mood to pressure Russia to return the Ukrainian territories it has captured.
