The UN has warned that increasing tensions in eastern Ukraine and recent clashes there could trigger full-scale fighting in the contested region
United Nations, Nov 13: The UN has warned that increasing tensions in eastern Ukraine and recent clashes there could trigger "full-scale fighting" in the contested region. In a briefing to the Security Council Wednesday, Assistant Secretary-General for UN Political Affairs Jens Anders Toyberg-Frandzen warned of the country's deteriorating situation.
"We are deeply concerned over the possibility of a return to full-scale fighting. The only alternative is for the fighting to end so that all Ukrainians can rebuild their lives in a stable and secure country," he added. In addition to clashes in the breakaway regions of Donetsk and Lugansk, over the last few days there have been reports of Russian military incursions to support pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine.
The Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe reported the entry of a new convoy with 43 military trucks carrying missile launchers and artillery in Donetsk. Toyberg-Frandzen compared the current circumstances in Donetsk and Lugansk with the situation before Sep 5 when the rebels and the Ukrainian government signed a ceasefire deal.
But according to the UN diplomat, the ceasefire is under continuous and serious strain.
