New Delhi: What can be termed a rise in the influence of the “Samosa Caucus” within Congress, Seven out of nine Indian American candidates secured their seats in the US Congress. Earlier, the caucus included five Indian American members: Ami Bera, Raja Krishnamoorthi, Ro Khanna, Pramila Jayapal, Jeremy Cooney, and Shri Thanedar.
Suhas Subramanyam, an Indian-American lawyer, has made history as the first person from his community to be elected to Congress from both Virginia and the entire East Coast.
Dr. Amish Shah, in Arizona’s First Congressional District, holds a slight lead over the incumbent Republican, marking another advance in the increasing representation of Indian Americans in Congress.
Subramanyan who is a Virginia State Senator defeated Mike Clancy of the Republican Party. He previously served as a White House Advisor to President Barack Obama “I am honoured and humbled that the people of Virginia’s 10th District put their trust in me to take on the toughest fights and deliver results in Congress. This district is my home. I got married here, my wife Miranda and I are raising our daughters here, and the issues our community faces are personal to our family. It is an honour to continue serving this district in Washington,” Subramanyam said.
Congressman Shri Thanedar won the re-election in Michigan’s 13th Congressional District, defeating Republican Martell Bivings by over 35 percentage points. Shri Thanedar has solidified his role as a key figure in Michigan politics with his re-election to the U.S. Congress from the state’s 13th District. The Indian American congressman achieved a decisive victory over Republican Martell Bivings, winning by more than 35 percentage points and securing a second term with strong backing from his constituents.
Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna won re-election to a US House seat representing California. Khanna easily defeated Republican Anita Chen in a solidly blue district. Khanna was first elected to the U.S. House in 2016 after unseating incumbent Rep. Mike Honda, another Democrat. Khanna serves on the House Armed Services Committee and on the Oversight and Accountability Committee. The 17th district, which includes parts of Silicon Valley south of San Francisco, has been a safe Democratic seat since at least 1990.
Pramila Jayapal has won reelection in the November 2024 election to represent Washington’s 7th Congressional District, thoroughly defeating Republican challenger Dan Alexander. The 7th Congressional District encompasses most of Seattle, minus parts of the Chinatown-International District, parts of the Central District, Beacon Hill and Rainier Valley. It also includes Burien, White Center and areas north of Seattle into Shoreline.
Congressman Ami Bera won the California’s 6th Congressional District, which includes Sacramento County, in the US House of Representatives. He is on the senior most Congressman representing California since 2013.
Krishnamoorthi was ree-elected for a fifth term in Illinois’ 8th District. Krishnamoorthi, first elected to Congress in 2016, is the ranking Democratic member of the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party. A Harvard University-educated lawyer, he held posts for the state, including former deputy state treasurer. The district includes a small section on Chicago’s northwest side as well as several west and northwest suburbs.
Democrat Jeremy Cooney has secured reelection in New York’s 56th State Senate District. The Associated Press announced the result on Tuesday evening. Cooney, first elected in 2020, has served as Chairman of the Transportation Committee since 2024 and is an active member of the Monroe County Democratic Committee.
