New York, Nov 9: Republican Donald Trump has taken a surprise lead over his Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton in most of the states in the US Presidential Elections 2016 and he is on his way to become the next President of United States of America. Winning the key battleground state of Florida, Donald Trump leads Hillary Clinton 232-209 in the race to 270 electoral votes. According to The New York Times, Donald Trump has 61 per cent chance of becoming the next US President. The possible US Presidential Elections 2016 has proved most pundits who had predicted the victory for Hillary Clinton wrong.
“Ohio, North Carolina and Florida supported Donald Trump and now we are hoping for ‘Ab Ki Baar, Trump Sarkar’,” said Indo-American Industrialist Shalabh Kumar. There is a huge celebration in Trump’s camp as most of the media houses predicted the surprising victory of the Republican candidate. According to CNN, Donald Trump enjoys impressive leads in Virginia, Georgia, Michigan, New Hampshire, Wisconsin, Montana, Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri and Wyoming and, vitally, in the key battleground states of Florida, Ohio and North Carolina. “Donald Trump is going to make our America greater, I believe that he will win and bring more job opportunities,” said an excited Trump supporter. Hillary Clinton was projected to win in New York, Texas, Vermont, Illinois, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Maryland, Rhode Island, Delaware, Connecticut and the District of Columbia. Clinton appeared to be leading Trump by a few per cent points in the early national polls but Trump — who had always been confident of winning — came back strongly.
In terms of overall vote percentage, Trump has so far received 49.2 per cent of the votes counted so far as against 46.5 per cent gained by Clinton. While the race has tightened in recent days, the Democratic nominee still seemed to enter Election Day with the edge on the electoral map in her quest to become the first woman elected US president. But Trump, a rank political outsider, voiced confidence yesterday about his chances in key battlegrounds.
How US Presidential Election is fought?
In the US, voters select presidential electors, who in turn, vote for the new president and vice president on November 8 through the Electoral College. Electors are apportioned to each of the 50 states as well as to the District of Columbia (also known as Washington, DC).
The number of electors in each state is equal to the number of members of Congress to which the state is entitled, while the 23rd Amendment grants the District of Columbia the same number of electors as the least populous state, currently three.
Therefore, in total, there are currently 538 electors, corresponding to the 435 members of the House of Representatives and 100 senators, plus the three additional electors from the District of Columbia. It may be noted that electoral members are not members of US Congress.
