New Delhi: While the presidents of the USA and Russia were engaged in high-stakes talks over the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, Russia’s advanced ballistic missiles wreaked havoc on Ukraine. The Russians also displayed that the American advanced Patriot air defence system deployed in Ukraine failed to perform its duty against the might of the Russian projectiles.

America, too, has admitted that its air defence systems have failed to stop Russian ballistic missiles in Ukraine.

What happened to the American Patriot SAM?

Patriot is an American advanced air defence system deployed in Ukraine, which failed to intercept Russian ballistic missiles. It is reported that the air defence systems were destroyed by Russia.

This development has raised serious questions about the utility of this system, as the report released by the Pentagon admits that the importance of Patriot is continuously decreasing in the face of Russian advanced ballistic missiles.

Why has the Pentagon report on Patriot’s failure raised alarm in Europe?

The Pentagon’s report has not only raised serious concerns about Ukraine’s security again, but has also created a worrying situation for those Asian and European countries which depend on the American Patriot for their air defense. The Pentagon report said that Russia has developed and advanced its Iskander-M and KN-23 ballistic missiles, obtained from North Korea, and Patriot air defenses have failed to intercept the manoeuvres of these missiles. The report said that these Russian missiles perform acrobatics in the air, changing their path repeatedly, which has made it difficult for Patriot to intercept them.

Why has the Patriot system failed in Ukraine?

Ukraine is completely dependent on American Patriot missiles to protect its skies and cities. In recent weeks, Russia has again started intense air attacks in Ukraine. In the last few weeks, hundreds of missiles and drone attacks have been carried out in the deep interior areas of Ukraine.

An exclusive report published in the British newspaper The Guardian has made the shocking revelation that the US now has only 25% of the stock of Patriot missile interceptors needed for the Pentagon’s military plans. The report states that “after the depletion of stocks in the Middle East in recent months, the US Pentagon has only about 25% of its Patriot missile interceptor stock. This is a worrying situation due to which Donald Trump has banned the transfer of weapons to Ukraine.”
