Dubai: In a stern message to the United States, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has said that if the US follows through on President Donald Trump’s threat, then it will face a strong blow, provided that Tehran does not reach a new nuclear agreement with Washington. Trump, on Sunday, reiterated his threat and said that if Iran does not accept his proposal for negotiations mentioned in a letter sent to Iran’s leadership in early March, it will face bombing. Trump further said that the attack would be so grave that the world would be shocked.

Why did Iran warn the Swiss embassy?

Iran has reportedly warned the Swiss embassy in Tehran regarding Donald Trump’s threats. It is important to note that the Swiss embassy serves as a mediator between Tehran and Washington and represents US interests in Iran. In its warning, Iran expressed its firm determination to respond to any threat in a “decisive and immediate” manner.

Khamenei said, “The enmity between America and Israel has always existed. They threaten to attack us, which we do not see as likely, but if they commit any mischief, they will certainly receive a strong response.” He added, “And if they are thinking of betraying the country from within, as they have in previous years, the Iranian people themselves will deal with them.”

The Iranian authorities have pinned the blame on the West for the unrest in the country. Iran has also made them liable for the 2022-2023 protests over the death of a young woman, Mahsa Amini, in custody after being detained for allegedly violating hijab rules, and the nationwide protests in 2019 over the increase in fuel prices.

Iran Responds to Trump’s Letter

Iran responded to the American letter last week. In a letter, President Masoud Pezeshkian made it clear that Tehran will not enter into direct talks with Washington. However, Iran is ready to continue indirect negotiations in accordance with Khamenei’s directives.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei tweeted on Monday, “An open threat of ‘bombing’ by any head of state against Iran is a shocking insult to the fundamental principles of international peace and security.” He added, “Violence begets violence, peace begets peace. The U.S. can choose its path and accept the consequences.”
