Leaked images going viral on Chinese social media indicate preparations are already being made in Beijing. The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) will display several new land and water-based weapon systems on September 3 to mark the 80th anniversary of Japan’s World War II, reported The Independent.

The upcoming parade is expected to be one of the biggest ever in China’s history, perhaps bigger than the 2015 parade for the 70th Anniversary, which had over 12000 soldiers and had contingents from international partners, such as Russia, Belarus, Mongolia, Cambodia, and others.

This month, Beijing held two large-scale rehearsals on the weekends of 9-10 August and 16-17 August, with 22,000 and 40,000 participants respectively, consisting of troops, the police, and members of the public. According to the Independent report, analysts believe next month’s parade will be an opportunity for the Chinese government to send a clear message to its rivals and demonstrate the successes of its ambitious military modernization programme.

Naval News states that the underwater drones, which are likely 60 feet in length, were seen being carried across the city on huge trucks. The hulls of the vessels are torpedo-shaped, and the pump-jet propulsion system suggests that they are designed to be stealthy.
