Seoul, Oct 11: The United States military on Tuesday flew Air Force B-1B Lancer bombers over the Korean peninsula for joint exercises with the South Korean Air Force, the South Korea military said. The bombs were also accompanied by two F-15K fighters from the South Korean military. This happened as US President Donald Trump gathered Pentagon chief Jim Mattis and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joseph Dunford to discuss “range of options” to deal with the North Korean nuclear test.
“The briefing and discussion focused on a range of options to respond to any form of North Korean aggression or, if necessary, to prevent North Korea from threatening the United States and its allies with nuclear weapons,” the White House said in a brief statement. The US military later said in a separate statement that the Japanese fighters had also joined the US and South Korean joint exercise, making it the first time for the US to have a joint exercise with South Korea and Japan.
The South Korean military on Wednesday said that two of its F-15K fighter jets flew with the U.S. B-1Bs soon after they entered South Korean airspace. The warplanes also conducted an air-to-ground missile drill between South Korea and China. (Also Read: Is Donald Trump Preparing For War With North Korea?)
“Flying and training at night with our allies in a safe, effective manner is an important capability shared between the US, Japan and the Republic of Korea and hones the tactical prowess of each nations’ aviators,” US Air Force Maj. Applegate added that this joint exercise is a “clear demonstration” of their ability to conduct “seamless operations with all of our allies anytime anywhere”. (Also Read: North Korea Threatens Japan With ‘Nuclear Clouds’)
On Wednesday, the US Pacific Command had revealed that nuclear-powered fast-attack submarine, USS Tucson, equipped with Tomahawk cruise missiles has arrived in South Korea.
This has come amid the tensions between North Korea and the United States following a series of tests by Pyongyang and verbal spats between Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un.
In last few week, North Korea launched two missiles over Japan and conducted its sixth nuclear test in its territory.
