New Delhi: US President Donald Trump on Wednesday said that he has so far imposed only initial sanctions on India for buying Russian oil and indicated that he has not yet implemented “phase two or phase three” sanctions. According to the report, the US president became irritated during a bilateral meeting with Polish President Karol Nawrocki in the Oval Office when a Polish journalist asked why, despite expressing disappointment with Russian President Vladimir Putin, he had not taken any concrete action.
Trump told the Polish journalist, “How do you know no action has been taken? Imposing sanctions on India, the second-largest buyer after China—would you say that’s no action? This has cost Russia hundreds of billions of dollars. Would you not call that action? And I haven’t even moved to phase two or phase three yet. But when you say no action has been taken, I think you need to find yourself a new job.”
Trump said that two weeks ago he had remarked, “If India buys oil, India will face big problems, and that’s exactly what happens. So don’t tell me about it.”
When he was asked about Chinese President Xi Jinping’s presence alongside Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at China’s military parade, and whether he was considering imposing secondary sanctions on Moscow, Trump replied, “I’ve already done that in relation to India, and we’re doing the same regarding other matters as well.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that he cannot compromise on the interests of farmers, livestock owners, and small industries. He cautioned, “Pressure on us may increase, but we will endure it.” India has called the US-imposed tariffs “unfair.”
