US Shutdown BIG UPDATE: In the latest development in the United States shutdown, Democrats have come up with a new proposal through which federal operations could reopen, easing the problems of millions of Americans who are suffering from the longest government shutdown. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on Friday announced that the Democrats have unanimously decided to support a bill to end the ongoing shutdown if the Republicans, led by US President Donald Trump, agree to extend key Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits, central to the healthcare law also known as Obamacare, until 2026. Notably, the tax credits are due to expire soon.
“All Republicans have to do is say yes,” the Associated Press quoted Schumer as saying.
It is worth noting that the proposal comes at a time when the pressure on lawmakers is rising from both parties to resolve the ongoing crisis caused by the shutdown.
Democrats want a joint vote to reopen the government and further extend ACA health care subsidies for one year. They also propose forming a bipartisan committee to review Republican suggestions for changes to the health care law.
Notably, Senator Gary Peters of Michigan-led plan will connect the tax credit extension with a short-term funding bill. The plan also link a package of appropriations measures to ensure the continued operation of government agencies.
Interestingly, the proposal shows a major shift in Democrats’ strategy, who have held their ground for over 35 days to protect ACA tax credits expiring on January 1. Both the major political parties have been silently negotiating to find the middle ground where they can mutually agree. But the fact is any deal or proposal is expected to include some conditions, specially future healthcare reform votes.
Republican leaders continued to stick to their plan, resisting linking healthcare issues to reopening the government. They want Democrats should initiate the voting process to end the shutdown before any discussion on health policy.
To resolve the issue, Republicans, as per several reports, are preparing a new bipartisan package of funding bills. A test vote is expected to held on Friday.
