India is celebrating Vijay Diwas today to commemorate the 54th anniversary of its 1971 war with Pakistan and the victory that saw the birth of Bangladesh. On December 16, 1971, Pakistan’s military commander Lt. Gen. A.A.K. Niazi formally surrendered to the Indian Armed Forces in Dhaka. As a result of this short 13-day war, millions of people from East Pakistan, which eventually became Bangladesh, were liberated. A day to celebrate this historic victory, Vijay Diwas is a moment to reflect on India’s military history.
The armed forces sacrificed their lives to ensure peace for the country and its citizens. Vijay Diwas is a day of great importance when India remembers the valour, dedication, and sacrifice of the country’s soldiers. It’s a day to pay tribute to their memory and tell the younger generation what happened on that fateful day.
Tributes being Paid by Defence Forces
The Indian Army’s Eastern Command is hosting Vijay Diwas 2024 celebrations in Kolkata on Wednesday. Military Tattoo, a live demonstration of military drill, martial arts, cultural activities, and customary aspects of the army, navy, and air force, will be held as a part of the celebration of victory.
The Eastern Command will also conduct a remembrance ceremony at the Martyrs’ Column in Kolkata to honour the fallen heroes of the 1971 war. Wreaths will be offered in honour of the brave men who made the ultimate sacrifice. The commemoration will include army officers and veterans, family members of martyrs, and civilian officials.
Additional Directorate General of Public Information (ADGPI), Indian Army, said in a statement: “The 1971 war is one of the most significant chapters in India’s military history. The Indian Armed Forces, along with the Mukti Bahini (liberation forces) of Bangladesh, fought valiantly against the Pakistan Army and achieved a decisive victory in just 13 days.”
Observations by National Leaders
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the nation’s armed forces on X. “As our country commemorates Vijay Diwas, we honour the valour of our armed forces, and the supreme sacrifice of those who laid down their lives for our nation in the 1971 war,” PM Modi wrote. The PM wrote how “The patriotism and selfless service of our brave soldiers will continue to inspire and guide us for years to come. Jai Hind.”
President Droupadi Murmu also tweeted, “On Vijay Diwas, I pay homage to the brave heroes of our armed forces who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. Their exceptional commitment to the nation shall remain etched in our collective memory. Jai Hind.”
President Murmu further wrote, “Our victory in the 1971 war against Pakistan has a very special place in India’s history. It changed the geopolitical landscape of South Asia, and it led to the emergence of Bangladesh as an independent nation.” The President’s statement marks a successful triumph over Pakistan in the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971.
On that memorable day on 16 December 1971, the Indian Army, Air Force, and the Indian Navy entered Dhaka with our diplomatic and military assistance, the Mukti Bahini forced the Pakistani Army to retreat. At Dhaka’s Race Course Ground, Lt. General A A K Niazi, the commander of the Pakistan Army’s Eastern Command, surrendered his army of 93,000 men.
This was one of the largest military surrenders since World War II. The war ended with the birth of Bangladesh, the newest South Asian nation. President Murmu’s message further reads, “Let us pay homage to the brave soldiers who gave their lives in that struggle, and celebrate our country’s hard-won victory.”
