Islamabad: The Torkham border has been closed following heavy shelling between Pakistan Army and the Taliban forces. The Taliban is building a checkpoint near the Torkham border. Pakistan is opposing it and that is why there has been heavy firing between the two armies for the last 36 hours. Pakistani media says that there is a war-like situation on the Durand Line. Both the Taliban and the Pakistani army have sent additional troops to the area as tensions between the Afghanistan and Pakistan rise further.
The closing of Torkham border has affected the trade. Long lines of trucks have formed on both sides of the border. The movement of ordinary citizens has also been stopped. Torkham is considered one of the most important routes for trade between Pakistan and Afghanistan. No meetings have been held to reduce this tension. In light of the fighting, both the Pakistani army and the Taliban are on high alert. The Torkham border connects Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province to Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province.
Forces of both countries on high alert
According to a report by Turkey’s Anadolu news agency, there was a dispute on Saturday, February 22 regarding the Taliban’s establishment of new military posts. Following this, the Torkham border has been closed to all types of vehicles. Since then, security forces on both sides are on high alert. As of Monday, 24 February 2025 morning, there has been no discussion about reopening the border. The Torkham border has been a point of contention between Afghanistan and Pakistan for decades, which often leads to its closure.
In November 2023, Pakistan launched a massive operation against illegal Afghans and later millions of Afghan refugees were sent back. Pakistan alleges that TTP terrorists present in Afghanistan are attacking its army and the Taliban government has turned a blind eye to these attacks. The Taliban government has denied the allegation. In December, the Pakistani army carried out airstrikes for the second time inside Afghanistan. The Taliban said 46 civilians were killed in the attack. At the same time, Pakistan had said that all these were TTP terrorists and their families.
