What does permanent residence mean in Malaysia?

Permanent Residence (PR) in Malaysia gives foreigners the right to live, work and study in the country without any fixed time limit. Although citizens with PR do not get the benefit of some rights, such as voting, they still get the benefit of many local facilities. These include Malaysia’s public health service, education system and more benefits than those with temporary visas.

Who can apply for the Malaysia PR?

Skilled professionals: Foreigners, including Indians, who have legally worked in Malaysia for at least five years.

High net-worth investors: Individuals who can deposit USD 2 million (about Rs 17.4 crore) in a Malaysian bank for at least five years.

Specific fields: Professionals specializing in science, medicine, technology or arts.

Spouses of Malaysian citizens: Indians who are married to Malaysian citizens can apply after five years of continuous residence.

MM2H program: The “Malaysia My Second Home” visa offers 10 years of residence for those who meet financial requirements, which serves as a path towards PR.

How to apply for the Malaysia PR?

The Immigration Department of Malaysia handles the application. Here is the general process:

  1. Confirm eligibility and prepare documents such as passport, proof of employment or investment, marriage certificate and recommendation letters.
  2. Submit the completed PR application to the Putrajaya or district office.
  3. Pay the processing fee of RM 500 (approximately Rs 10,400).
  4. Wait for the assessment, which can take 2-5 years.
  5. If your visa is approved, a PR entry fee of RM 1,500 (approximately Rs 31,200) must be deposited. Additional fees may apply for dependents.
  6. Get the blue MyPR card, which is your official proof of permanent residence.
