The White House said on Tuesday that US President Donald Trump often talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and trade teams from both countries are having serious talks to strengthen their partnership. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that President Trump has great respect for Prime Minister Modi and that the two leaders speak quite often.
She added that the US and India are continuing strong discussions on trade and economic cooperation, showing that progress is being made in the talks. "The President and his trade team continue to be in very serious discussions with India with respect to that topic," she added.
At a press briefing, Leavitt was asked about the future of India-US citizenship. On this, she said that Trump feels very "positive and strongly" about it.
She also mentioned that President Trump recently spoke with Modi during Diwali celebrations at the Oval Office, where several senior Indian-American officials were present.
"The President is very positive about the relationship between India and the United States," Leavitt said, adding that Washington's ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, is doing excellent work.
During his visit to South Korea last week, President Donald Trump said he hoped to reach a new trade agreement with India, suggesting that relations between the two countries may be improving after a period of tension.
Ties had worsened earlier when Washington doubled tariffs on Indian imports to 50 per cent in response to India's continued purchases of Russian oil. The U.S. had first placed a 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods on July 30, and then added another 25 per cent a week later for the same reason.
After the United States imposed new sanctions on Russia's major oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil, Indian oil refiners have cut back on their imports of Russian crude.
