New Delhi: A man undergoing treatment for H5N5 bird flu has died in Washington, USA. According to the state health department, this is the first confirmed case of the H5N5 variant in the world.

The deceased man was from Grays Harbor County. He was elderly and had pre-existing medical conditions. According to the health department, he had several types of domestic birds in addition to chickens at his home. Traces of bird flu were also found in the birds’ living quarters.

This suggests that the most likely source of infection was these domestic birds or nearby wild birds. The department stated that the risk to the general public remains very low. No other individuals associated with this case have tested positive.
