Marwan Barghouti is widely regarded as Israel’s most significant Palestinian prisoner, viewed by many Palestinians and Israelis as a potential leader capable of advancing a two-state solution. His prominence comes from his political and historical role, his imprisonment, and his widespread support among Palestinians.

Marwan Barghouti: Israel’s Most Important Prisoner

Marwan Barghouti has been a central figure in Palestinian politics and a symbol of resistance since his imprisonment in 2002. Serving five life sentences and an additional 40 years for his involvement in the Second Intifada, Barghouti was convicted of directing attacks that led to the deaths of five Israelis and planning others as the head of Tanzim, the military wing of Fatah. Despite this, he has emerged as a significant advocate for non-violent resistance, urging Palestinians to pursue “peaceful popular resistance of the occupation” during a 2012 court appearance.

Why Is Barghouti Important?

Barghouti is seen as a unifying figure among Palestinians, renowned for his integrity and commitment to the two-state solution. He is considered the most likely successor to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. Media reports and Polls consistently place him as the most popular choice for leadership, far ahead of any other Fatah leader, even during periods when Hamas has gained traction.

Barghouti’s popularity is partly rooted in his image as a leader who is untainted by the corruption allegations that plague the current Palestinian leadership. His standing is further bolstered by his role in authoring the 2006 “Prisoners’ Letter,” a document co-signed by representatives of Fatah, Hamas, and other factions. The letter, crafted within the confines of an Israeli prison, outlined a framework for a two-state solution and demonstrated Barghouti’s ability to build consensus across ideological divides.

Barghouti: A Symbol Of Hope

For many Palestinians, Barghouti’s imprisonment has elevated him to legendary status, likening him to Nelson Mandela for his perseverance and vision. His time in prison has only amplified his stature, with his calls for unity and non-violence resonating across Palestinian society.

Barghouti’s release has been a subject of speculation, particularly in the context of potential prisoner exchanges. As of now, over 9,000 Palestinians are held in Israeli prisons, with many detained following the October 7 Hamas attacks. Barghouti’s release could be pivotal in fostering new negotiations and potentially advancing the prospect of a two-state solution. However, such a move would require a bold decision from Israel’s leadership.

Will Netanyahu Release Him?

While his release remains uncertain, Barghouti’s influence endures. There is hope among his supporters that he could be released, as part of a deal with Hamas for the Israeli hostages. Some of the experts think that he will be released by a post-Netanyahu government if there is any hope for a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestinian crisis. However, his release during the current Netanyahu government’s regime is uncertain.
