Indian Railways offers several advantages that make train travel one of the most preferred options in the country. It provides an affordable mode of transport compared to air or road travel, making it accessible to people from all income groups.
Have you seen a train coach marked 'M1'? Do you know what it means? Whether you're travelling to/from large cities such as Bengaluru, Delhi, Mumbai or Hyderabad, the 'M1' has a specific classification. The M1 category of coach is part of a new coach classification by Indian Railways. This new classification is intended to help passengers plan their travel better.
Introduced in 2021, these labels—M1, M2, M3—are used by Indian Railways to identify AC 3-tier economy coaches, commonly known as 3E. These markings make it easier for passengers to quickly locate their assigned coach on the platform, reducing confusion during boarding and ticket checks. In simple terms, if your ticket mentions 3E, you should look for coaches in the M-series.
Prior to the introduction of M-series coaches, AC 3 Tier Coaches were assigned codes like B1, B2 and sleeper coaches were labelled with S1. The new addition of M-series coaches provides Indian Railways a budget friendly AC travel option compared to other previously existing AC coaches. These coaches are mainly used in LHBs (Lightweight Stainless Steel Coaches using German Technology) enabling faster and safer operations. M-series coaches can also be found on many long haul routes from major cities such as Hyderabad and Secunderabad.
An M1 coach and standard 3AC coach differ in a few key areas. They’re both classified as AC three-tier coaches but M1 is considered a more economical option based on its number of berths/beds and ticket price. A 3AC coach has approximately 72 berths and the M1 coach has approximately 83 berths; this gives a passenger a coach with more beds/berths. However, you may experience slightly less leg room in the M1 coach than in the 3AC coach. According to the News18 report, M1 ticket prices are usually 6-8% lower than standard 3AC coach ticket prices.
Conventional 3AC coaches normally offer you more comfort than other types of coaches. For example, they come with privacy curtains, providing more individualised privacy for each berth. In comparison, M1 coaches are slightly more compact—especially around the middle berths—due to their higher seating capacity. That said, M1 (3E) coaches still include all essential amenities such as charging points, reading lights, fans, and air conditioning. Basic facilities like toilets and bedding (on select trains) are similar to standard AC coaches, although M1 coaches usually accommodate more passengers, making them relatively more crowded.
As per the guidelines of Indian Railways, M1 coaches are designed to make air-conditioned travel more budget-friendly and widely accessible. For passengers travelling on routes such as Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, or Vijayawada, this means they can enjoy AC comfort at a lower fare. Students and working professionals can save around ₹300–₹500 per trip, while the higher seating capacity also helps improve seat availability during busy travel seasons.
For many passengers, cost plays an important role while planning travel. On long-distance routes such as Secunderabad–New Delhi, opting for an M1 coach can help a family save nearly ₹1,000–₹2,000 while still enjoying air-conditioned comfort. Booking is also straightforward—just check the coach details on the IRCTC Rail Connect website or app. If the coach is listed as M1, it indicates the economy AC option. These coaches are now becoming more common on several busy and popular train routes across the country.
For M1 bookings, refund policies are the same as other AC classes, but once a ticket is booked, the coach type cannot be changed. Going ahead, Indian Railways is expected to introduce more M-series coaches across additional trains to increase availability. Overall, M1 coaches are designed to make AC travel more affordable, but for long journeys, passengers may still need to balance lower fares with comfort preferences.
