Kangana Ranaut stepped in Bollywood with portraying a classic role in romantic crime drama genre Gangster. She played the character of a girl Simran who is stuck between her conflicting feelings for a criminal and a cop. Kanagana received her first Filmfare Award for Best Debut with this movie.
Kangana played character of a supermodel in the movie and stole al the limelight from Priyanka Chopra’s character that was actually of the movie. The performance fetched her a National Award in the best supporting actress category that year.
Giving up her unconventional side, Kangana took a conventional romantic thriller after long and romanced Ajay Devgn in this movie. Her breezy chemistry with camera, especially when paying tribute to yesteryear divas in her dazzling retro avatar, is hard to miss.
A real-life romance lived upon the big screen by Kangana, ‘Woh Lamhe…” is a tribute to yesteryear’s actress Parveen Babi and her relationship with noted filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt. While Kangana plays Sana Azim with impeccable brilliance, Mahesh’s character is brought to life on the screen by Shiney Ahuja as Aditya Garewal.
Kangana reportedly was unsure about playing a mutant but director Rakesh Roshan persuaded her to take it up. The actress held her own in the film, despite it being a Hrithik Roshan-vehicle, and the leading lady was Priyanka Chopra.
Kangana’s character of Rani did not just got her more fans and appreciations but the film won a leading six awards, including Best Film, Best Director, and Best Actress for Ranaut. At the 62nd National Film Awards ceremony, the film won the Best Hindi Film and Best Actress awards.
Simran has to be praised only for Kangana’s effort, and nothing else. Being a divorced Gujju NRI woman, Simran falls for her obsession of impulsive stealing, initially, in order to repay the loan sharks, followed by her lack of any such financial motive. ‘Simran’ is yet another brilliantly set example of Kangana’s picking up on weaker scripts and making them her own by word and by the act, thus becoming worthy of all the praise.
Tanu Weds Manu brought Kangana back on the map. She went with director Aanand L Rai's conviction, co-starred with R Madhavan, and came up with a winning performance.
Kangana comes back in this movie, not just as the inimitable Tanuja Trivedi but also as her doppelganger, a young Hariyanvi student athlete Kusum aka Datto, who if possible, is even more endearing than Tanu! Naturally we found all of us falling hopelessly in love with this talented actress who plays both the sassy diva Tanuja as well as the tomboyish, no-nonsense Datto with ease.
