On Manna Dey’s 88th birth anniversary we have still not forgotten him and remember him through few songs from his golden collection that will continue to entertain even years after. There are few songs that suddenly come in our mind while humming tunes and these are few of those.
Picturized on legendary actor Raj Kapoor, we remember this song for its lyrics too. Manna was primarily a singer of light scores; maybe some light classical songs as well.
Manna Dey had not directly hit Bollywood as he was primarily a classical singer but debuted in the industry with ‘Upar Gagan Vishal’ song from the movie Mashal of 1950.
Burman Dada, whom Manna assisted for some time must have sensed that Manna had in him to sing in an open throated manner, like his uncle K C Dey. Before Mashal lit up, Manna had sung in inconsequential in films like Tamanna, Ram Rajya (one of the two films seen by Mahatma Gandhi), Jwar Bhata (Dilip Kumar's first film), Kadambari, Kavita, Mahakavi Kalidas, and many more).
This one is still hummed for friends who are deeply bonded with friendship and is celebrated as a friendship anthem.
Manna Dey's first playback for Raj Kapoor which followed within a year - Tere bina aag yeh chandni (Awara, 1951, Shankar Jaikishan) - again was an example of his open throated singing.
From the late 1960s to the mid 1970s, his faces on the screen were Pran, Om Prakash, Shammi Kapoor, Ashok Kumar, Premnath et al, all elderly people and character actors. We still miss him with his melodious music and wish the play these songs time and again.
