From inspiring classrooms to unforgettable mentors, these 9 Bollywood and Hollywood films beautifully capture the struggles, emotions and lasting impact of the teacher-student relationship.

Movies that celebrate the power of a great teacher

Teachers’ Day is a chance to look back at the people who helped us learn, grow and find confidence in ourselves. Over the years cinema has given us several memorable teachers whose influence goes far beyond books and classrooms. Some stories stay with us because their characters feel familiar. Others become special because they remind us of someone who once encouraged us when we needed it the most. These films explore that feeling through different stories and characters.

Taare Zameen Par – When a teacher sees what others miss

Aamir Khan and Darsheel Safary lead this emotional story about Ishaan Awasthi, a young boy struggling with studies and unable to fit into the expectations of his school. Things change when art teacher Ram Shankar Nikumbh recognises his talent and understands that Ishaan needs support rather than punishment. Tisca Chopra and Vipin Sharma also feature in the film. It remains one of the most loved portrayals of a teacher looking beyond marks and discovering a child's real potential. Unfortunately, the film is not available for streaming.

12th Fail – The mentor who teaches you to restart

Vikrant Massey stars as Manoj Kumar Sharma in this inspiring drama based on a real-life journey. After facing failure and financial difficulties Manoj decides to prepare for the UPSC examination. Along the way teachers and mentors become an important source of guidance. Medha Shankr, Anant V Joshi and Priyanshu Chatterjee also feature while Dr Vikas Divyakirti appears as himself. The film shows that education is not only about clearing an examination but also about developing courage, honesty and the ability to begin again. Viewers can find 12th Fail on JioHotstar.

Iqbal – A dream that found the right coach

Shreyas Talpade plays Iqbal a deaf and mute young man who dreams of becoming a cricketer. His talent gets noticed by Mohit played by Naseeruddin Shah, a former cricketer who decides to train him. Their relationship becomes the heart of the film as Iqbal battles personal and social obstacles to chase his dream. Shweta Basu Prasad and Girish Karnad are also part of the cast. It is a beautiful example of how a mentor can recognise ability when others only see limitations. Iqbal can be watched through Prime Video and Zee5 while digital rental and purchase options may also be available.

Super 30 – Education becomes a ladder to success

Hrithik Roshan plays mathematician and teacher Anand Kumar in this drama inspired by his journey of helping talented students from financially weaker backgrounds. He creates a special programme for 30 students and prepares them for the highly competitive IIT entrance examination. Mrunal Thakur, Pankaj Tripathi, Aditya Srivastava and Amit Sadh also feature in the film. The story highlights the role of a teacher who chooses to use knowledge as a way of creating opportunities for others. Super 30 can be found on JioHotstar for viewers planning a Teachers’ Day movie marathon.

Dead Poets Society – A teacher who teaches students to think beyond the walls

Late legendary Robin Williams delivers one of his most memorable performances as John Keating, an unconventional English teacher at a strict boarding school. Instead of simply following the traditional curriculum he encourages his students to think independently and discover their own voices. Robert Sean Leonard, Ethan Hawke and Josh Charles also star in the film. Keating's lessons gradually change the way the boys see education, life and themselves. The film remains an enduring Teachers’ Day which is available on JioHotstar.

Hichki – Turning challenges into strengths

Rani Mukerji plays Naina Mathur, a teacher who faces repeated rejection because of Tourette syndrome. When she finally gets an opportunity to teach she is assigned a challenging class whose students are considered difficult by the school. Instead of giving up Naina works to understand them and finds ways to make learning engaging. Neeraj Kabi, Rohit Saraf and Sachin Pilgaonkar also feature in the film. Her story shows that empathy and patience can build trust inside a classroom. Hichki is another Teachers’ Day watch that audiences can find on Netflix.

Stanley Ka Dabba – The teacher who notices the child behind the silence

Stanley Ka Dabba takes a quieter approach to the teacher-student relationship. The film follows Stanley, a creative schoolboy who regularly shares food with his friends because he does not bring a lunchbox. While one teacher treats him harshly another teacher begins to notice that there is much more to Stanley's story. Partho A. Gupte, Amole Gupte, Divya Dutta and Raj Zutshi feature in the film. It explores how kindness and attention can make a difference in a child's life. Stanley Ka Dabba can be explored on YouTube for free.

Black – Education that changes two lives

Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukerji lead this deeply emotional film about Michelle a deaf and blind girl and Debraj Sahai, the teacher who refuses to give up on her. Through patience and unconventional methods Debraj helps Michelle understand the world around her and pursue education. Shernaz Patel and Ayesha Kapur are also part of the cast. The relationship eventually becomes much deeper than a traditional teacher-student bond and the film shows how education can give someone independence, confidence and hope. Black is available to revisit on Netflix.

The Ron Clark Story – A teacher refuses to give up

Late Matthew Perry played real-life teacher Ron Clark who leaves his successful teaching career to work with students in an inner-city school in Harlem. He takes on a class that others have already labelled difficult and tries to connect with the children through unconventional teaching methods. Ernie Hudson, Hannah Hodson and Melissa De Sousa also star in the film. His determination gradually changes the classroom and gives the students confidence in their own abilities. The film can be found on YouTube for free.
