Popular tourist spots in Japan like Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Sendai, and Kumamoto are also areas where earthquakes happen often. Even though these places are safe to visit, they are located in regions that experience frequent seismic activity.
The Noto Peninsula in Japan is home to must-see spots like Chirihama Nagisa Driveway, Shiroyone Senmaida, and Noto Kongo. The area is frequently subjected to seismic tremors, including the 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake on New Year’s Day, which caused significant damage to the region.
Osaka has iconic spots like the neon-lit Dotonbori, historic Osaka Castle, and thrilling Universal Studios Japan. Known for its proximity to the Nankai Trough, a major fault line capable of producing significant earthquakes.
Sendai in Japan is packed with nature, gourmet food, history, culture, sports, and sightseeing spots. Located in the Tōhoku region, this city was severely affected by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami.
Yokohama is a major city port that has scenic Minato Mirai 21 waterfront, the sprawling Yokohama Chinatown, the interactive Cup Noodles Museum, and the historic Red Brick Warehouse. Yokohama City is said to be particularly susceptible to major earthquakes. You never know when an earthquake will occur.
Tokyo is Japan's capital and offers a vibrant mix of tradition and modernity, featuring top attractions like the historic Senso-ji Temple, bustling Shibuya Crossing, and the panoramic Tokyo Skytree. It is situated near multiple fault lines, and the capital experiences frequent shaking and is vulnerable to major events similar to the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake.
