There are many countries which maintain oil reserves strategically. This is done to deal with unforeseen circumstances of supply disruptions and energy crises. The International Energy Agency (IEA) has also recently urged the nations of the G7 to coordinate and release the stockpiles of emergency oil reserves so that global markets can become stable.

Globally, there are countries which are heavily dependent upon the oil imports. They typically maintain emergency stockpiles so that their energy supplies can remain protected in case a disruption occurs. Under the rules of the IEA, the member nations which are net oil importers must have a reserve of 90 days.

The Donald Trump-led United States has nearly 415.4 million barrels of crude oil in its petroleum reserves. Alongside, the private companies have almost 439.3 million barrels as their commercial reserves, as reported by Reuters.

Japan also holds massive reserves of oil. It has almost 260 million barrels in the government-based reserves. Alongside, the government reserves also cover nearly 146 days of imports, as reported.
