Heatwave conditions will intensify over the next four to five days. Hot winds are expected to sweep across the plains of North India.
In several areas, temperatures may rise above 45 degrees Celsius. Experts have advised people to avoid stepping out in the afternoon during the heatwave.
Heatwave conditions are expected on different dates between April 20 and April 25 in parts of Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Punjab, Rajasthan (eastern and western regions), Maharashtra (Vidarbha region), Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh (eastern and western regions), Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal (Gangetic region), Jharkhand, and Odisha.
Prayagraj with 44.4 degrees Celsius recorded the highest temperature in Uttar Pradesh as heatwave conditions gripped several parts of the state
Several cities across the state witnessed maximum temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius, indicating intense heat conditions. Varanasi recorded 44.0 degrees Celsius, while Banda, 43, and Sultanpur, 43.3, were also among the hottest places.
The weather department said that parts of Gangetic West Bengal, particularly the southern region of the state, are likely to experience hot and humid conditions between April 20 and April 26.
Heatwave conditions are likely in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal from April 20 to 22; in Kerala and Mahe, as well as coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam from April 20 to 24
Warm night conditions are likely on April 21 in Haryana, Chandigarh, western Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and the Vidarbha region.
Heatwave conditions are also expected in Odisha between April 20 and April 22.
The IMD also stated that moderate to strong winds may blow on Monday across various states in South, Central, East, and Northwest India.
