Complaints of Electronic Voting Machines malfunctioning poured in from several booths on Tuesday during the third and largest phase of Lok Sabha polls which saw voters turning out in large numbers till afternoon to cast their vote in 116 seats, including all constituencies of Gujarat and Kerala. BJP president Amit Shah, Congress chief Rahul Gandhi and several Union ministers are in the fray in this phase. As the polling began, Prime Minister Narendra Modi cast his vote at a booth in Ahmedabad and said the “voter ID” (identity card) was much more powerful than the “IED” (improvised explosive device) of terrorists.

An average 35.70 per cent voter turnout was recorded till 1 pm in 14 seats of Maharashtra where polling for the third phase of Lok Sabha elections was underway on Tuesday, an official said. Polling began at 7 am and long queues were seen outside many booths. The Kolhapur Lok Sabha constituency reported 42.04 per cent voting till 1 pm, followed by Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg, where there was 39.93 per cent polling, according to the state election office. Besides, Jalgaon recorded 33.12 per cent voting, Raver-35.15 per cent, Jalna-37.91 per cent, Aurangabad-35.42 per cent, Raigad-38.74 per cent, Pune-27.17 per cent, Baramati-35.58 per cent, Ahmednagar-34.73 per cent, Madha-33.41 per cent, Sangli-34.56 per cent, Satara-34.84 per cent and Hatkanangale-39.68 per cent.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday fielded Punjabi singer Hans Raj Hans from North-West Delhi Lok Sabha seat, hours after incumbent MP Udit Raj threatened to quit the party if not given a ticket from the seat. “I am waiting for the ticket. If not given to me, I will do goodbye to party,” Udit Raj tweeted this morning. This was one of the reasons behind the delay in announcing Hans’ candidature, party insiders told PTI. Notably, Hans will take on Guggan Singh of the AAP and Rajesh Lilothia of the Congress. Earlier on Monday, Raj and dozens of his supporters had created a ruckus outside Delhi BJP office on Pant Marg. Hans Raj Hans was also then present at the office along with other party leaders.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued a contempt notice to Congress president Rahul Gandhi for attributing the ‘chowkidar chor hai’ jibe against Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the court. The development comes a day after Rahul expressed regret in the apex court for linking his jibe at PM with the top court’s order on Rafale. The court said that the Rafale Deal review petitions matter will be heard on April 30 Calling his remarks ‘unfortunate’, the Congress chief had yesterday accepted that the top court never used those words against the PM. In his response to the SC, in connection with a contempt petition filed by BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi, Gandhi asserted that he had made the statements in the heat of political campaigning which have been misused by his opponents. On April 10, soon after the Supreme Court verdict last week, Rahul had reportedly said, “I am ready to debate with PM Modi at a location of his choosing… the corruption in the deal is very evident… he has given IAF’s money to Anil Ambani. The SC order today proves that chowkidar chor hai .”

Bollywood actor Sunny Deol on Tuesday joined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in presence of Union Ministers Nirmala Sitharaman and Piyush Goyal on Tuesday. If reports are to be believed, the ruling party may field the actor from Punjab’s Gurdaspur or Chandigarh Lok Sabha seat. “He (Sunny Deol) understands the pulse of people and we are certain he will prove to be a strong leader,” said Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The development comes days after BJP chief Amit Shah met the actor in Pune. If reports are to be believed, Shah met the ‘Gadar’ actor in a bid to convince him to contest from Amritsar Lok Sabha seat. Addressing media, Deol said,”The way my Papa worked with and supported Atal ji, I am here today to work with and support Modi ji. My work will do the talking.”

With Lok Sabha 2019 third phase polling underway in Gujarat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday met his mother Heeraben Modi at her residence in Gandhinagar to seek her blessings before casting his vote for Ahmedabad parliamentary seat. Further, Narendra Modi was also seen greeting people outside his mother’s residence. A video put out by ANI showed PM Modi sitting adjacent to his mother on the sofa. Further, the mother was seen handing over a piece of cloth to PM Modi, which was followed by a brief conversation between both.

An initial probe into deadly suicide bomb attacks in Sri Lanka that killed more than 300 people shows it was “retaliation for Christchurch,” the country’s deputy defence minister said on Tuesday. “The preliminary investigations have revealed that what happened in Sri Lanka (on Sunday) was in retaliation for the attack against Muslims in Christchurch,” state minister of defence Ruwan Wijewardene told parliament. Fifty people were killed in shooting attacks on two mosques in the New Zealand city of Christchurch on March 15. Meanwhile, UNICEF spokesman Christophe Boulierac has said there were 45 children among those killed in Sri Lanka’s Easter Sunday bombings.
