West Bengal Assembly Passes Bill to Change State’s Name to Bangla; Awaits Centre’s Approval
The West Bengal Assembly on Thursday passed the bill to change the state’s name to ‘Bangla’. The resolution passed in the state assembly will now be sent to the Home Ministry for consideration. Once approved, West Bengal’s name will officially be changed to ‘Bangla’. In September last year, the West Bengal had cleared the proposal to change the state’s name, which was later rejected by the Centre. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had proposed that the state be named Bangla in Bengali, Bangal in Hindi and Bengal in English. According to the state government, it wanted the named to be changed because West Bengal is always last in a list of states in alphabetical order.
