A day after the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet adopted a proposal to rename the historic city of Allahabad as Prayagraj, reports are doing rounds that other institutes that consists the name of the district will also be renamed soon. The proposal will now go to the Centre before the city is officially renamed. Speaking to The Indian Express, Government spokesperson and Cabinet minister Siddhartha Nath Singh indicated that the names of Allahabad High Court and Allahabad Railway Station may also be changed soon. “There are some central institutes, organisations named after Allahabad… There is the high court, railway station… letters would be sent to them for the same and to take the process forward,” he told IE. On Tuesday, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, while announcing the Cabinet decision, said, “Keeping in view the feelings and emotions of the people, Allahabad has been renamed Prayagraj by our government. Five hundred years ago the name of the place was Prayagraj as it is at the `Triveni Sangam’ (a confluence of three rivers).”

After days of speculation over the motive behind the killing of the wife and son of an additional district and sessions judge by his personal security officer (PSO) at a busy market last Saturday, police have termed the incident as a “cold-blooded murder”. According to The Indian Express, the police also said the crime was done in the spur of the moment when the mother-son duo chided the accused for not being near the car when they returned after shopping. “They had asked Head Constable Mahipal to wait near the car while they went shopping but, when they returned, he was not there. After they managed to track him down, they scolded him and the son asked him for the car keys,” said DCP (Crime) Sumit Kumar while addressing the press on Wednesday. “Mahipal got into a fight with Dhruv, the judge’s son. When his mother tried to intervene, Mahipal shot her before turning his weapon on Dhruv,” he said.

Responding to Pakistan’s warning of 10 surgical strikes against India in response to a single such attack, Lt Gen Ranbir Singh GOC Northern Command said that the Indian Army is fully prepared and any challenging task can be undertaken when required. He further added that it doesn’t who made the statements. “I assure you that the Indian Army is fully prepared. When required any challenging task can be undertaken. It doesn’t matter as to what statements are being made from what quarter,” he said, news agency ANI reported. Speaking of the counter-infiltration grid at the Line of Control (LoC), Singh said that they are very effective at various tiers of the grip up to the hinterland.

A preliminary enquiry into the derailment of the New Farakka Express has indicated that it went off the tracks as a mechanical installation which guides trains from one track to the other had failed to respond, according to a report. The report of the Commission of Railway Safety (CRS) released Tuesday suggested the reason behind the derailment was that it was given a green signal despite the point failure. A point is at the juncture of two tracks – only when it creates a path for the train, a signal is given to it to go ahead. In this case, despite the point of failure, the train was given a green signal, the report suggested. The commissioner of railway safety, who is investigating the accident, has recommended that the railways should decide a reasonable time as well as a reasonable number of attempts after which a point, not responding to the command given from contrail panel, is to be declared as failed.
