PM Narendra Modi on Wednesday received the ‘Champions of the Earth’ award, UN’s top environmental honour, for international solar alliance initiative. The PM was selected along with four other environmental changemakers. An official statement said PM Modi and French president Emmanuel Macron were recognised in the Policy Leadership category for their “pioneering work in championing the International Solar Alliance and promoting new areas of levels of cooperation on environmental action.” The award recognises leaders from government, civil society and the private sector who have had a positive impact on the environment. It has felicitated 84 laureates, ranging from leaders of nations to grassroots activists.

Underscoring the need for an upgrade in the force, IAF chief Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa said on Wednesday that, “Both Rafale and S-400 air defence missile system deals are like a booster dose.” Dhanoa was addressing the press at a briefing in the national capital on Wednesday. While the Rafale deal has been marred by controversy, Dhanoa clearly batted for the aircraft as he insisted that it was a good deal and “we have got a good package, got a lot of advantages in Rafale deal.” As far as the S-400 missile deal is concerned, it has been under the cloud because of the US threat of sanctions if India went ahead with procuring the Soviet missiles. However, latest reports have suggested that the deal would be inked when Russian President Vladimir Putin visits India on Thursday. He added that 24 months from the time the deal is inked, S-400 missiles will be delivered. “As and when the government approves it, delivery will be in 24 months,” he said.

A major fire broke out at Kolkata Medical College and Hospital on Wednesday. The pharmacy department of the hospital in reportedly engulfed in blaze. As per latest reports, the blaze has been doused. 10 fire tenders were rushed to the spot. Meanwhile, at least 400 patients, along with their relatives, have been evacuated safely. Informing that all the patients are safe, news agency ANI tweeted, “Fire breaks out in the pharmacy department of Kolkata Medical College and Hospital. 10 fire engines and Kolkata police rushed to the spot. All the patients are safe.”

The Kerala High Court on Wednesday rejected bail plea of former Jalandhar Bishop Franco Mulakkal, who has been accused of rape by a Kerala nun. The accused was sent to two weeks judicial custody till October 6, after being produced before a magistrate court in Pala. He would be lodged at a sub-jail in Kottayam district unless the high court gives him bail. Franco Mulakkal, the Bishop of Mulakkal, is facing allegations of raping a Kerala-based nun repeatedly between 2014 and 2016. However, the clergyman denies the charges of sexual misconduct. He was arrested on September 21 in Tripunithura after three days of questioning.
