Sanjay Gandhi was born on 14 December 1946 in New Delhi to Indira Gandhi and Feroze Gandhi. Sanjay studied first at Welham Boys' School and then at the Doon School in Dehra Dun. Sanjay never attended college, but took up automotive engineering as a career and underwent an apprenticeship with Rolls-Royce in Crewe, England for three years.
Sanjay Gandhi was not considered to be a media friendly person and did not like to be shot by paparazzi.
Sanjay was a close aide to mother Indira Gandhi during 1975 emergency and the country’s administration was considered to have been from Prime Minister’s House than Prime Minister’s Office, for Sanjay’s direct interference in PM’s role.
Sanjay Gandhi had issued his five pointer plan to be implemented for the betterment of country’s situation: Literacy, Family planning, Tree Planting, Eradication of Casteism and Abolition of dowry.
Although he had not been elected and held no office, Sanjay began exercising his new-found influence with Cabinet ministers, high-level government officials and police officers. While many Cabinet ministers and officials resigned in protest, Sanjay reportedly appointed their successors.
Before he died in an air crash in 1980, he escaped an assassination in March 1977, when unknown gunmen fired at his car about 300 miles south-east of New Delhi during his election campaign.
