India is showing variety with Indian having their own version of nationalism with varying boundaries. Traders of Tamil Nadu have decided to boycott foreign drinks Pepsi and Coca Cola in the state in a bid to promote the home made soft drinks.

In support of this decision, one of the traders of the association said “Foreign-made drinks are not good for health and added that the associations will promote Indian soft drinks and juices, and their manufacturing.”

The associations accuse that the cola companies of drawing too much water from the rivers, which they said has impacted irrigation and farming in the state. The pumping of water, the associations said, has depleted water basins and has severely affected farmers during draught.

While bright side of the story says that Coca-Cola and PepsiCo India together provide direct employment to 2,000 families in Tamil Nadu and more than 5,000 families indirectly, through their extensive supply chain. They also play a critical role in improving the livelihood of over 2 lakh retailers, who earn more than Rs. 400 crores in income by selling products manufactured by the two companies.

And the facts say that 70 per cent of the (15 lakh) traders have decided to boycott the sales of Coke and Pepsi from today onwards for their toxic nature. Now the shopkeepers have the leftover stock of Pepsi and Coca Cola in stores as they are not buying new stocks of the same.

While small shopkeepers will be at loss with this decision because, almost 15 lakh of the 20-odd lakh stores in Tamil Nadu were selling cola brands manufactured and marketed by Coca Cola and Pepsi, running into several hundred crores of rupees.
