Glenn Maxwell was absent from Punjab's clash against Chennai Super Kings on April 30. At the toss, skipper Shreyas Iyer revealed that Maxwell was on the mend from a fractured finger. Following that update, it was confirmed that he would miss the remainder of the IPL 2025 season.

Punjab Kings brought an uncapped all-rounder Mitchell Owen as his replacement. A standout performer for Tasmania in domestic cricket, Owen shot to fame after smashing a century off just 39 balls in the 2024/25 BBL final. He has been signed for Rs 3 crore.

In 34 T20 appearances, Mitchell Owen has amassed 646 runs with an impressive strike rate of 185. Among all T20 batters, no one has accumulated more runs at a quicker scoring rate. He also contributes with the ball, offering useful medium-pace options.

Mitchell Owen is presently representing Peshawar Zalmi in the current PSL season. In seven matches so far, he has scored 101 runs at a blistering strike rate of 198, though his average sits at 16.83. He has also chipped in with two wickets. Sitting fifth on the points table, PZ remain in contention for a playoff spot, though their qualification is far from guaranteed.

According to a report by ESPNcricinfo, Mitchell Owen is set to link up with Punjab once Peshawar Zalmi's PSL 2025 campaign wraps up. Should Zalmi miss out on the playoffs, Owen could be available for Punjab’s final two league fixtures and potentially the IPL playoffs. However, if Zalmi progress to the knockout stage, his availability will be limited to just the IPL playoffs, assuming Punjab secure qualification themselves.

Before this, Corbin Bosch became the most recent PSL player to join an IPL team. After Lizaad Williams was ruled out before the 2025 season, Mumbai Indians brought in Bosch as a replacement. To take up the opportunity, Bosch had to terminate his PSL agreement, also with Peshawar Zalmi and as a result, faced a one-year suspension from the Pakistan league.
