Bihar, the state which was never taken seriously on the cricket map. But times have changed and now cricket stars have started emerging from this soil. Once Mahendra Singh Dhoni gave wings to hopes, then players like Ishan Kishan and Akash Deep started to shine on the field. And now young names like Vaibhav Suryavanshi have started to shine.
But if we go back a little, we will see that in the 90s, there was a player from Bihar who went to the cricket stronghold of Australia and spread terror with his bowling. His name is Subroto Banerjee. The story of this fast bowler born in Patna can inspire today's youth.
Subroto Banerjee joined the Indian team when the country was looking for a fast bowler. His true talent was identified by the MRF Pace Foundation. This was the time when only a few fast bowlers emerged from here. In 1991-92, Banerjee was included in the team for the tour of Australia, where fast and bouncy pitches have always been a challenge for Indian bowlers.
But Subroto Banerjee from Patna did something different. He got a chance as the fourth seamer in the Sydney Test. India took the risk of playing without a special spinner in that match, and Banerjee got a chance to prove himself. He created a stir in the Australian camp by dismissing great batters like Mark Waugh, Mark Taylor and Geoff Marsh in the very first innings. This performance was big for that era, a new face, that too from Bihar, and roaring on Australian soil.
However, Subroto Banerjee's international journey was not long. He got a chance in the Benson and Hedges World Series, then became a part of the team in the South Africa tour. But he did not get a second chance to play Tests. One reason was believed to be that he was not able to bowl long balls consistently, and his balls often went short and wide.
Subroto Banerjee emerged at a time when there was neither social media nor any platform like IPL. He knocked on the door of Team India on the basis of his talent alone. He took wickets in Australia at a time when it was not easy for any Indian bowler to survive there.
