In this collection of pictures we shall know what did former India coach say on Shubman Gill's appointment as ODI captain ahead of Australia tour. Let's take a closer look.
India and Australia are ready to face off in an upcoming white-ball series, which includes three one-day matches and five T20 games, starting on October 19. Before the matches begin, the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) made an important announcement.
The board has chosen star player Shubman Gill to lead the Indian team in one-day matches. His first time as captain will be in the upcoming series against Australia. Even though Rohit Sharma is part of the team, Gill was picked to lead, as the board wants to prepare a strong team for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Before the series began, ex-India player Ravi Shastri supported the BCCI's move to make Shubman Gill the new one-day captain. He said the board is focusing on what's best for the team in the long run.
"They are looking at the future and this is what Australia did really well in the past. They wouldn't wait till a player starts failing. They'll be proactive like you saw with Ian Healy and Adam Gilchrist, similarly Dean Jones to Steve Waugh. So India are looking ahead two years from now. Gill respects both Rohit and Virat, having played under both of them," Shastri said on the LisTNR Sport podcast.
"Unless there is a series scheduled in Australia before the 2027 World Cup, this will be their (RoKo) last time in Australia. That'll be their last tournament (2027 World Cup). They are giants and will want to go out on their terms. And they'll not want to hang around. If they are not up to it in terms of hunger and fitness, they'll go just like they left Test cricket and T20Is," Shastri said.
