Star England batter Joe Root continued his impressive form with a century in the fifth Ashes Test in Sydney.
Root is very close for breaking Sachin Tendulkar's all-time Test runs record. Already second on the list of leading run-scorers in the format, he is now closing in on the landmark.
Before the fifth Test, Root has scored a total of 13,777 runs, while Tendulkar tops the table with 15,921. Trailing the Indian great by 2,144 runs at the time, the England star has since significantly narrowed the gap, bringing it below the 2,000-run mark.
Root required only 145 runs to take the gap between himself and Tendulkar to under 2000 runs and he has now done that during the fifth and final Ashes Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
Root went on to smash his 17th score of 150 or more in Test cricket, moving past Mahela Jayawardene on the list for the most 150-plus knocks in the format. He now trails only Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara, Kumar Sangakkara, and Don Bradman in that elite list.
He played a superb knock, which included 15 fours, before his knock ended at 160 when he chipped a return catch to Michael Neser.
Root's 160 further closed the gap on Tendulkar in the all-time Test runs chart. He has now scored a total of 13,937 runs from 297 Test innings, just 1,984 runs behind the former India great.
