Captain Rohit Sharma, who led the Indian cricket team to victory in the T20 World Cup and Champions Trophy, has retired from Test cricket. Now he will be seen playing only ODI format for India. Till now Rohit Sharma is the captain for India in white ball format (ODI only).
Rohit has openly expressed his love for red ball cricket many times. Even his father likes Test cricket and he also seemed disappointed with Rohit's retirement. Rohit said this during an interview. In such a situation, can the BCCI and selectors show Rohit Sharma the way out of the ODI team as well, this remains a big question in itself.
Rohit Sharma wants to play the 2027 ODI World Cup. At present, Rohit is more than 38 years old and there is still more than 2 years left for the World Cup 2027. By then Rohit will be more than 40 years old. In such a situation, will the BCCI and selectors want to bet on him. This is the biggest question.
It is also possible that like Tests, the selectors may drop Rohit Sharma from ODIs as well and think about making a future team that can play in the ODI World Cup 2027. India has got a new captain in the form of Shubman Gill after Rohit in Tests. At the same time, Suryakumar Yadav has been made the T20 captain of India as Rohit's successor after his retirement from T20. Now only the ODI format is left, so if Rohit is removed as captain, then the BCCI and the selectors will be forced to look for his replacement.
According to some media reports, Shreyas Iyer, who impressed everyone with his captaincy in the Indian Premier League (IPL), is considered a contender for the white ball captaincy of the Indian cricket team. If the BCCI and the selectors remove Rohit Sharma as the captain of the ODI cricket team, then Shreyas Iyer's name can be considered as the captain.
Iyer scored 530 runs in 11 matches with 2 centuries and 3 half-centuries while batting in the middle order for India in the ODI World Cup 2023. He also has experience of playing the ODI World Cup. Under his captaincy, Iyer made KKR the winner in IPL 2024 while he played the final in IPL 2025 where he lost by 6 runs.
