On Wednesday, November 5, the Indian women’s cricket team and head coach Amol Muzumdar met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his residence on Lok Kalyan Marg. The Prime Minister welcomed the Women’s World Cup champions and praised Harmanpreet Kaur and her team for their victory in the final held at DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Sunday, November 5.
The Prime Minister appreciated the Indian women’s team for their outstanding comeback in the tournament after losing three matches in a row. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur remembered meeting the PM in 2017 when they didn’t have the trophy, and said that now, meeting him with the trophy feels special — and they hope to meet him more often in the future.
Vice-captain Smriti Mandhana said that the Prime Minister encouraged the team and has been a great source of inspiration for all of them. She also mentioned that women are succeeding in many areas today, and she credited the PM for supporting and motivating them.
All-rounder Deepti Sharma, who received the Player of the Tournament award, said she had been eager to meet the Prime Minister. She remembered their meeting in 2017 when the PM had encouraged them to keep working hard, assuring them that their dedication would help them achieve their dreams.
The Prime Minister talked about Deepti Sharma’s Instagram post where she wrote 'Jai Shri Ram' and mentioned the Hanuman tattoo on her arm. Deepti said it gives her inner strength. The PM also remembered Harleen Kaur's famous catch against England in 2021, which he had praised on social media back then.
The Prime Minister talked about how Harmanpreet kept the match ball after the final. She said she felt lucky that the ball came to her and decided to hold on to it. The PM also mentioned Amanjot Kaur’s memorable catch, which she completed after a few fumbles. Amanjot said that’s one fumble she’s happy about. The PM added that while taking a catch, players focus on the ball, but once they catch it, they should picture the trophy instead.
