Sanju Samson showed what India missed in the first half of the tournament as he rose to the occasion in must-win Super 8 clash against West Indies in T20 World Cup 2026 at the Eden Garden.
Chasing the highest total India has ever pursued in a World Cup, the task was far from easy, but Samson played a sensational knock as was unbeaten at 97. He anchored the innings brilliantly, pacing the chase perfectly, and sealed the victory with a powerful winning shot in the final over.
West Indies put up a remarkable fight throughout the game, but India's resilient batting, led by Samson, ensured they booked their spot in the semifinals, keeping their World Cup dreams alive.
Sanju Samson also made history by breaking Virat Kohli's record to set a new benchmark for India in T20 World Cup run chases.
Samson's unbeaten 97 is now the highest score by an Indian in a chase, surpassing Kohli's previous best of 82* against Australia in Mohali in 2016 and against Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in the 2022 edition of the tournament.
Samson also became the second highest individual run-scorer for India in T20 World Cups, surpassing both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who scored 92 and 89 respectively.
Sanju Samson was also named the Player of the match for his heroics knock. "It means the whole world actually to me. I think right from the day I started playing, started dreaming to play for the country, I think this is the day I was waiting for. And I’m very grateful, very thankful" 6Samson said in the post-match presentation ceremony.
