Star India cricketer Shreyas Iyer is in stable condition after suffering a scary on-field injury during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on Saturday, which resulted in internal bleeding and required emergency ICU treatment.
Doctors later diagnosed a ruptured spleen and internal bleeding caused by a blunt blow to the abdomen.
The BCCI officially confirmed the diagnosis in a statement and said, "The injury was promptly identified, and the bleeding was immediately arrested. His condition is now stable, and he continues to be under observation. A repeat scan on October 28 has shown significant improvement. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, will continue to monitor his progress."
Iyer's condition was initially critical, as sources reported his blood pressure had fallen to "dangerously low levels" before doctors quickly intervened to stop the bleeding. To stop the bleeding, he was moved to the ICU and had a non-surgical medical procedure performed.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia informed TOI that Iyer has been recovering more quickly than anticipated, "Shreyas is much, much better. His recovery has been much faster than what doctors anticipated. He didn’t undergo surgery but a different procedure. He's stable, out of ICU, walking, and eating normally now," Saikia confirmed.
The BCCI is making arrangements for Shreyas Iyer's sister, Shresta Iyer, to fly to Sydney to be with him. Meanwhile, the board's medical representative, Dr. Rizwan Khan, is closely monitoring his treatment.
While talking about Iyer's recovery, India's T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav said, "We spoke to him the first day we found out. He's been replying to messages and talking normally, which means he's doing fine. The doctors there are taking good care of him."
Medical experts explain that a spleen laceration is a sensitive and potentially life-threatening injury since the spleen is one of the body's most blood-rich organs. The internal bleeding it causes can be severe, making quick detection and management essential.
Having scored 496 runs in 11 ODIs this year, Iyer is likely to stay under medical observation for at least a week and may be ruled out of India's upcoming ODI series against South Africa, which begins on November 30.
