In the 28th match of the Big Bash League 2024-25, Melbourne Stars defeated Sydney Sixers by 16 runs. Melbourne Stars posted a score of 156/5 in 20 overs, and Sydney Sixers could only manage 140/9 in response.
Chasing a modest target, Sydney Sixers didn’t start well, losing Josh Philippe (8) early at a score of 22. James Vince, however, played a solid innings, scoring 53 runs, but the rest of the batting lineup faltered, and they couldn’t chase down the target.
After Vince’s dismissal, Sydney Sixers kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Despite playing all 20 overs, no other batsman could make a significant contribution, leading to their second loss of the season.
Melbourne Stars' batting didn’t get off to a great start. Sam Harper was dismissed for 4 runs in the second over, and Ben Dunk was dismissed for 20 runs off 14 balls. Dan Lawrence and Marcus Stoinis also fell cheaply, leaving Stars at 60/4.
Beau Webster played a steady hand for Melbourne Stars, scoring 48 runs off 41 balls. His partnership with Glenn Maxwell was crucial in stabilizing the innings after a poor start, ensuring a competitive total for the team.
With this win, Melbourne Stars achieved their third consecutive victory in the season, while Sydney Sixers suffered their second loss, keeping them at the middle of the standings
Sean Abbott was the most successful bowler for Sydney Sixers, taking 3 wickets. He put up a strong performance, but the other bowlers couldn’t provide the necessary support to restrict the Stars' scoring in the middle overs.
