Shreyas Iyer, who led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to their IPL triumph last season, is set to take on a new challenge as the captain of Punjab Kings (PBKS) in IPL 2025. However, few know that his first close encounter with the IPL came as a ball boy during a match between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Reflecting on this experience, Iyer shared how that moment sparked his dream of playing in the league.

During his time as a ball boy, Iyer had the chance to interact with New Zealand’s Ross Taylor, who was playing for RCB at the time. Speaking on JioHotstar’s 'Superstars' programme, he recalled being initially shy but mustering the courage to approach Taylor. "He was one of my favourite players. I told him, 'Sir, I am a big fan of yours,' and he was very kind and thanked me," Iyer shared. Though many ball boys asked for gloves or a bat, Iyer admitted he was too reserved to do so, despite wanting to.

Iyer also fondly remembered meeting Punjab Kings’ all-rounder Irfan Pathan during the same match. He was in awe when Pathan sat next to the ball boys and asked if they were enjoying the game. "We told him we were having a great time. Irfan bhai was very popular, and Punjab had some of the most stylish players back then, including Yuvraj Singh. That moment has stayed with me even after so many years," Iyer recalled.

Iyer made his IPL debut in 2015 with Delhi Capitals (then Delhi Daredevils) and instantly made an impact. In his debut season, he scored 439 runs in 14 matches at an average of 33.77, earning him the 'Emerging Player' award. His ability to play fearless cricket set the tone for his future in the tournament.

Iyer’s leadership potential was recognized early, and in 2018, he was appointed as Delhi Capitals’ captain. He led them to their first-ever IPL final in 2020, where they finished as runners-up to Mumbai Indians.
