West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday announced that a new cricket stadium in Siliguri will be named after wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh, who was part of India maiden ICC Women's World Cup-winning squad.
The state government will build the new facility and name it Richa Cricket Stadium.
Ghosh was born and brought up in Siliguri, North Bengal. The 22-year-old batsman-wicketkeeper was instrumental in India's victory in the women's World Cup.
"The 'Richa Cricket Stadium' will be built on a 27-acre plot at the Chandmani Tea Estate. This is a way to honour Richa, one of Bengal’s shining sports talents, and also encourage more young cricketers from north Bengal. The project will soon be undertaken by the state government," Banerjee told reporters in Siliguri.
The state government gave Ghosh a gold chain, the "Banga Bhushan" award, and an appointment as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) on Saturday.
The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) honoured her for her contribution to India's maiden ICC Women's World Cup triumph. The ceremony at Eden Gardens was graced by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and CAB president Sourav Ganguly.
Ghosh received prize money of Rs 34 lakh and a golden bat from Ganguly. Former India pacer Jhulan Goswami was also present.
Ghosh amassed 235 runs in eight innings at an average of 39.16 and a strike rate of more than 133. Her highest score was 94 against South Africa.
In her 51 ODI appearances and 49 innings for India, Ghosh has scored 1,145 runs, at an average of 29.35 with a strike rate exceeding 103, which includes seven half-centuries, and a top score of 96.
