Parsis all over the country will be celebrating Navroz 2017 on Monday and Tuesday. According to the old Persian Calendar, Navroz is the first day of spring. Navroz is derived from two Persian words, 'nav' meaning 'new' and 'roz' meaning 'day', which means a new day.

According to ancient Zoroastrian beliefs, Jamshed the king of Persia took over the throne on the festival of Navroz. Parsis celebrate this auspicious day with full zeal.

The Parsi New Year which is also known as Jamshed-e-Navroz is celebrated on the first day of the first month of the Shehenshai calendar. The festival is named after the Persian ruler Jamshed in whose reign the festival began and is a symbolic of rejuvenation and rebirth.

On this auspicious day Parsis decorate their homes with rangoli and torans (flower garlands) swing from the doors. All the family members wear new clothes and visit Zoroastrian fire temple.

For Parsi community fish is a symbol of good luck and prosperity hence Mawa Ni Boi (mawa sweet moulded into a fish) is distributed among friends and family. On the festival day the morning begins with delicious plates of sweet sev (vermicelli) served with sweet dahi Dhan. For lunch Parsis have Dhan Dar Dar Patio (a simple yellow dal served with a spicy seafood pickle) followed by Ravo (a milk-based dessert) which makes it a typical Navroz lunch.
